My First Microdermabrasion

My first microdermabrasion experience was wonderful. I wanted to share my concerns prior to my appointment and my answers to these questions after my treatment.

1.) What is a microdermabrasion?
It uses a light wand, with tiny exfoliating crystals, moving gently over the skin to provide exfoliation. It can be performed on all skin types and treats acne-prone skin, rough skin texture, sun damage, enlarged pores and hyperpigmentation. It works best on problems such as dull skin, brown spots, and age spots.

2.) What is the actual process like?
I showed up makeup free and the esthetician cleaned my face and then covered my eyes with cosmetic stickers to protect them. She then turned on the machine and got to work. She started at my forehead and moved down the left side of my face and then worked her way to the other side and up. I talked to her the entire time and it was very easy. Afterwards, she wiped my face and then put on a minty mask that stayed on my face for a few minutes. After a few minutes, she wiped the mask off, cleaned my face and I was done. The whole thing took less than 20 minutes!

3.) “Sanding”? “Crystals”? Does it hurt?
No, the microderm does not hurt at all. I was worried because my skin tends to be dry and sensitive, and I didn’t want to come out looking red and feeling raw. This is going to sound strange, but the sanding feels like a cat is licking your face and it has a bit of suction to it. I talked to my esthetician the entire procedure and it didn’t hurt a bit!

4.) What is the point? What results can you expect?
A microdermabrasion takes off the dead skin cells that rest on the outer most surface layer of the skin. The results that I personally experienced are an incredible smoothness to the texture. My skin feels like a baby without any tenderness. The image shows what I looked like after my microderm.

5.) Is there anything else I can pair with my Microderm?
Yes, you can do a chemical peel immediately following the microderm. Instead of putting on the minty mask like I experienced, your esthetician would then apply a chemical peel. I opted out for this because again my skin tends to be dry and sensitive, and I wanted to see how I would do with just the microderm. Next time, I’m going to try the chemical peel too!
