All About Micro-Needling
- Posted on: Feb 8 2019
Micro-needling is an exciting innovation in skin rejuvenation. It is great for people on the go as the treatment takes about 30 minutes and has virtually no downtime or discomfort. It is something that patients with all skin types and color can enjoy the benefits of. Studies show that micro-needling can be as effective as laser resurfacing, without the downtime.
What is Micro-Needling?
Micro-needling involves the use of multiple tiny needles to create microscopic injuries in a regular pattern on the skin. This process, called Collagen Induction Therapy, is directed at the dermis to stimulate the body’s natural wound healing mechanisms to produce collagen and elastin. The process improves skin thickness, color, texture and evenness.
Benefits of Micro-Needling
Micro-needling helps reduce the appearance of pore size, brown spots, scars (such as acne, surgical & keloid scars), fine lines, stretch marks and even tattoos.
Special skin rejuvenation products are applied after the treatment to address your specific area of concern such as brightening serums for brown spots, growth factors for collagen stimulation and renewal, and hyaluronic acid for hydration.
A new advance is the addition of PRP, platelet rich plasma, to the treatment regimen. We draw your blood and spin it down to retrieve the nutrient rich layer off the top called plasma. This plasma is chock full of your own body’s natural growth factors and platelets that work to stimulate tissue regeneration, increase your collagen production, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and brighten your skin. The PRP is infused into your skin via the micro channels produced during the micro-needling treatment. It is autologous (from your own self) with no risk of an allergic reaction as it is not anything foreign!
Who is a Candidate for Micro-Needling?
If you are looking for brighter, smoother, more evenly toned skin without any downtime, micro-needling may be a good solution for you.
Micro-needling is painless, efficient, and quick, and has been proven to work well on all skin types. Unlike some lasers, which may not be able to be used on darker skin, micro-needling can be used on both dark and light skin tones. With micro-needling, there is no heat of a laser so there is no risk to darker skin tones.
Talk with your NDDA dermatologist to see if micro-needling may be able to help with your skin concerns.
What’s New in Micro-Needling?
Micro-needling is also a great new option for tattoo removal. Unlike lasers, which break apart tattoo ink so that it can be absorbed into the body, micro-needling actually draws the ink out of the skin in a process called transepidermal elimination. Given that there is no systemic absorption of the ink, many people are choosing micro-needling over laser tattoo removal for this reason.
