5 Ways to show your skin some loveYour skin, the largest organ of the body, is everything from the first thing that someone notices when they glance your way, to your protector from toxins, infections and the elements. Your skin undergoes a daily beating from smoke sunlight, pollution, dirt and grime. Over time, these beatings begin to take their toll on the skin. It’s time to help our skin repair some of that damage and show it some love!

Here’s a list of 5 simple ways to show your skin some love.

1) Wear Sunscreen- 
The single most important piece of advice that a dermatologist can offer is to incorporate sunscreen into your daily routine. This will not only protect you from sunburns, but it will also help to reduce the risk of melanoma and slow the aging of the skin. Make sure to use a broad spectrum sunscreen because it will protect you from UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays are the rays that lead to premature aging and UVB are the rays that lead to those horrible burns. Wearing sunscreen should become so embedded in your routine that a day without it would feel like a day without brushing your teeth.

2) Moisturize- Over time our skin can become dry and flaky without the proper level of moisture and conditioning. Take some time to show your skin some love by giving it a good rub down. For your am routine, try to find a moisturizer that also has the UVB and UVA protection. A recent study confirmed that wearing sunscreen reduces the incidence of photoaging by 24%.

3.) Ditch the tanning bed- We ALL love that sun kissed look, but that doesn’t mean you have to fry your skin to get there. Consider a spray tan instead. They last 5-10 days depending on your routine and it will leave you looking totally natural. Statistically speaking, those that use tanning beds before the age of 18 are 85% more likely to contract skin cancer than those who don’t. Skin cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world and can be preventable. Don’t kill yourself over a tan; it’s really not worth it.

4.) Go see a dermatologist- It is really important to visit your dermatologist on a yearly basis for a check-up. Those little freckles on your back may be something more and it’s better to get things checked early than to wait. A dermatologist can also help with recommending different products and services to meet your skin care needs.

5.) Wash your face- I know there are nights where we all get lazy, but it is so important to wash your face and to remove your makeup before going to bed. While you sleep, the skin repairs and restores itself. Sleeping with your makeup can lead to an increase in wrinkles, breakouts, and sensitive skin. Washing your face clears out your pores and gives your skin a break. Makeup has a lot of chemicals that become absorbed into the skin and it’s important to remove it at the end of the day in order to let your skin breathe.
