The Importance of Regular Exfoliation

Exfoliation is essential to a well-balanced skincare routine. As we age, our cell turnover slows down and dead skin cells build up, leading to clogged pores, dull, rough skin texture, sometimes excess oil production and acne. Exfoliation can help with these problems, as it specifically targets dead cell buildup on the surface of the skin.  By removing the dead, top outer layer and unclogging pores, a well-maintained exfoliation regimen can help skin to become brighter, smoother, and less acne-prone.
Exfoliation can be done in two ways: mechanically, with a scrub, or chemically, with an acid peel. Scrubs should generally be done once a week, while peels should be done once a month or so. However, while it’s important to remove dead skin cells, you don’t want to strip away too many of your natural oils and you will need to rehydrate with a good moisturizer post treatment – so finding the right balance for your skin type is essential.
Another major benefit of exfoliation is that it helps skin care products to better absorb into the skin. Buildup on the skin can prevent products from penetrating fully, so regular exfoliation is necessary in order to let products reach their full efficacy. Also, it allows for smoother application of spray tans and self-tanners, and it can help to prevent ingrown hairs and razor bumps. It’s great for keeping skin hydrated as well, because it will allow moisturizers to sink in better. Exfoliation can even help to reduce the appearance of brown spots over time.
